The rugby program established at CVR (Chateauguay Valley Regional High school) in Ormstown is proving highly successful. The U15 Boys rugby team from Ormstown ended the season elegantly on Sunday, August 14 by taking the U15 Provincial Championship.

The players began their day with a win against Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue in the semi-finals. Then in the finals, they beat the team from Beaconsfield with a score of 20-12.

On the same day, a U18 team comprised of girls from Ormstown and  Beaconsfield took the women's Mont-Tremblant 7s Rugby Tournament with four wins and no losses.

Players from the region at the Canadian Championships

Twelve young athletes from the region will participate in the Canadian Junior Rugby Championships which take place August 16 to 21 in Toronto.

Gregory Recher, Jérémy L’Heureux, Liam Duncan, Tristan Villiers, Darcy O’reilly and Gabriel Vaillancourt were selected to play with the Quebec U16 team.

Liam Priest and Marco Caza will join the Quebec U18 team while Thomas Burton from Ormstown will play with the Alberta U18 team.

At the women's U18 level, Christina Buermans, Sabrina Buermans, Gabrielle Catto and Emma Krobath will line up with the Quebec team.

The high level of participation by athletes from the region at the National Championships and the performance of junior teams from Ormstown are due to the quality of the athletes in our region and also the rugby program at CVR High school in Ormstown and the Ormstown Saracens Mini Rugby Program which was established a few years ago.

This year, CVR won the Greater Montreal Athletic Association (GMAA) Juvenile Rugby Championships and over 80 youth between the ages of 6 and 18 participated in the Ormstown Saracens Rugby Program.

Rugby is becoming more popular in Quebec especially with the Canadian Women's Rugby Team winning a Bronze Medal at the Rio games. (M.P.-C.J)
