The Haut-Saint-Laurent MRC Sûreté du Québec have reported two collisions involving deer during the past week.

On the evening of Monday, July 4 around 9:45, a car driving south on route 201 in Ormstown hit an animal whose proper name is the White Tailed Deer. The deer ran onto the pavement and the driver was unable to avoid hitting it.

The sixty four year old man from Ormstown suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Hôpital du Suroît in Valleyfield. The animal died on impact and the car was badly damaged.

A few days later in the early afternoon, a motorcyclist hit a deer on route 202 in Franklin. The fifty eight year old resident of Huntingdon was driving "west" when the collision occurred. The driver escaped with minor injuries for which he was treated at the hospital in Valleyfield. The damage to his motorcycle amounted to several thousand dollars.

Careless driving

Speeding appears to have caused a driver to lose control of his car  and flip over into the ditch along rang Saint-Charles Ouest in Saint-Anicet on Sunday, July 3 around 4:45 p.m. He drove off the road on a curve and police believe reckless driving caused the accident.

The driver and two passengers, all from Montreal, were spared serious injury. They were all taken to the Hôpital du Suroît in the same ambulance. The car had over $2000 worth of damage.

Seizure of illegal tobacco

The police seized more than 50 bags filled with contraband bulk tobacco which was being transported by a resident of Akwesasne in the back of his pickup truck. The twenty four year old suspect was stopped on chemin Central in Saint-Stanislas-de-Kostka after the Sûreté du Québec received an anonymous phone call.

A search warrant was obtained and the tobacco which was contained in black bags was confiscated. The individual from the Aboriginal Reserve will face charges under the Tobacco Act.
