The Ormstown Lions Club sponsored the Lions International Peace Poster Contest, titled Celebration of Peace, 2016-2017. The contest, which spans across the world, is meant to teach youth about the importance of peace on a global level.

On a local scale, grade six students from École Notre Dame du Rosaire and Ormstown Elementary School were given a wonderful opportunity to express their unique understandings about peace and what it means to celebrate it, via art. Both schools chose to include this meaningful exercise as part of their curriculum, resulting in thirty-one thoughtful pieces. Lion Pamela Mulderrig acted as facilitator of the contest while Lion Dominique Léveillé, president of the club, Lion Muguette Filion and a community person adjudicated.

École Notre-Dame du Rosaire students presented their posters to the class as part of their English Second Language oral assessment while Ormstown Elementary School students included their posters as part of their Culture and Ethics portfolios. In recognition of their efforts, all students and staff received a laminated bilingual book mark outlining the benevolence of the Lions Club.

One first place, two second place and two third place participants were selected. After careful consideration, first-place winner, Ormstown’s Kaitlyn Collum Gagnon, wrote the following quote about peace on the winner’s sticker: Peace turns a storm into a rainbow. “Fine words for a truly worthwhile endeavor,” said Lion Mulderrig.

The Lions Club is one of the world’s largest service club organizations. With 46,000 clubs and over 1.4 million members, the Lions club makes for a considerable charitable force.
