Following a very successful summer market season, and in response to local demand, the Huntingdon County Farmers’ Market will be extending its fall season and will now end on October 24. “There has been a lot of positive momentum over the last few years,” says Market Coordinator Ian Ward, recalling the fact that only a short time ago the market was in danger of being shut down. “We were able to harness that momentum and maintain it this year despite some challenging conditions,” he continues, noting the colder than usual start to spring followed by several months of above 30 degree weather coupled with rain and severe weather warnings each week. “In the midst of peak harvest season, it seemed unfortunate to cut the season short,” he concludes, of the previously announced final market on October 3. And, with relatively friendly weather forecasts for the next month, the hope is that visitors follow through on requests to keep the market running. “It seems like we are hitting a sweet spot where people know they can depend on the producers each week and vendors know they can count on returning visitors and a steady clientele. “Without that, it doesn’t work,” says Mr. Ward. Upcoming Christmas Market With the start of cooler nights and the end of the summer season in sight, the Board of Directors for the Market are already well into the planning for the upcoming Christmas Market, set for December 2, at the Recreation Centre in Ormstown. Registration is now open with limited spaces available for the area’s largest Christmas themed market. Once again this year, visitors will be able to expect over 40 of the finest local producers, and with a policy that forbids resale, you can be sure that the items for sale are all locally produced, grown or created.
