The agricultural model of supply management remains a deeply held value for many agricultural producers. On this campaign, Bloc candidate Claude DeBellefeuille, has reiterated her commitment to defend, at all costs, this system which ensures stable prices for agricultural products.

For Claude deBellefeuille, the mechanism for supply management is indispensible to the survival of many farms in the riding.

“Without supply management, a good number of the some 1400 agricultural businesses within the territory of the riding and the $353 M that they generate annually would be in serious jeopardy,” she states.

The Bloc candidate is raising the alarm because there is currently enormous pressure coming from the rest of Canada and in particular the West to abandon the supply management system.

“The NDP, Liberals and Conservatives are all in the same boat. It’s the same in the case of oil. They can’t be specific about Quebec because they have to answer to the electorate in other provinces. Only the Bloc Québécois is in a position to defend our agricultural businesses without compromise. No one will be sacrificed in order for us to win or hold on to votes in the West. We will always be the best insurance policy for our farmers,” she stated.

The candidate for the Bloc Québécois also took advantage of the occasion to commit to fighting changes to the Federal Program for temporary foreign workers which is creating discontent particularly among apple growers and vegetable producers in the riding.

With this in mind, Claude DeBellefeuille puts agriculture at the heart of her political involvement in Ottawa. “Just as it was during my two previous mandates in the House of Commons, rest assured you will hear about me fighting tooth and nail for the issues specific to agriculture in Quebec, whether it’s defending the supply management system, criticizing changes to the temporary foreign worker’s program or promoting our local producers,” she concluded.
