Area youth were once again honoured during the annual Rural Youth Gala on May 16 during a ceremony which took place at the Community centre in Saint-Anicet. A total of 107 young people were nominated for their implication in their community, which represents the largest number of youth to be recognized since the start of the Gala 9 years ago. This year’s nominees, aged from 6 to 24 years old, were nominated for their hard work and dedication in one of five categories; Volunteer or Citizen Involvement, School or Social Perseverance, Healthy Living Habits (food or sports), Cultural Action, and the Environment. The evening was hosted by masters of ceremony Sammi Brisebois and Samuel Lessard, who kept the evening moving at a quick pace. Interspersed throughout the evening were a number of performances by several of the young people nominated, including: the members of 1, 2, 3 Action Notre-Dame-du-Rosaire, Fée Ste-Marie, Marissa Arnold, and the Troupe Divas. A special Youth Mentor of the Year award was presented to Mr. David Brisebois, and the Little JR award was presented to Jamy-Lee Poole. The annual Gala was made possible by contributions from a number of municipalities, the MRC du Haut-Saint-Laurent, local businesses and organizations. As well, the evening received funding from Salaberry-Suroit MP Anne Minh-Thu Quach, Huntingdon MNA and Minister for Small and Medium Enterprises, Regulatory Streamlining and Regional Economic Development, Mr. Stéphane Billette, as well as Soulanges MNA and Minister for Rehabilitation, Youth Protection, Public Health and Healthy Living and the Minister responsible for the Montérégie region, Ms. Lucie Charlebois.
