Another Iraqi migrant turns himself in to police

For some time now, a week rarely goes by without migrants entering Canada illegally by crossing the border not far from the Dundee Customs House in the Haut-Saint-Laurent Region.

On Wednesday, October 12, another Iraqi refugee turned himself in by knocking on the door of a house on Rivière de La Guerre in Saint-Anicet. It was 9:30 p.m. when the 27 year old man arrived in the Saint-Anicet area after having walked some 6 kilometres through the woods to the north of Dundee Centre Rd. According to the Haut-Saint-Laurent MRC Sûreté du Québec, he was well dressed and carrying a backpack.

The refugee asked the occupant to call the police to facilitate his entrance into the country. The Iraqi, who appeared to be comfortably off financially, was handed over to the RCMP by the SQ. He had an American visa and had arrived at JFK Airport in New York.

Immigration Canada took charge of his file and he should find out soon what his future will be. Migrants are either left free to apply for Canadian residency or they are placed in detention.
